White & Case
  Pro Bono
Our Commitment
For years we have been a leader among national firms in the strength and depth of our pro bono commitment. We seek out and take on matters referred to us by many legal services organizations, including the Community Law Office of the Legal Aid Society, Volunteers of Legal Services, the panels established by the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, Legal Services for the Elderly, the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, the Lawyers Alliance for New York and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest.

Recently, White & Case was a recipient of the President's Pro Bono Service Award of the New York State Bar Association. This year, we have been presented with an award by the Legal Aid Society for our work on criminal appeals for its Criminal Appeals Bureau. Also, in 1993, we were given an award for outstanding pro bono service by the Legal Aid Society.

Our pro bono work includes political asylum and other human rights work and discrimination suits, Social Security hearings and appeals, consumer matters and prisoner rights, including death penalty cases. We have challenged Immigration and Naturalization Service practices on constitutional grounds and participated in a case seeking to establish a constitutional right to counsel in the New York City Housing Court. We are very active in non-litigation areas as well, including advising and assisting not-for-profit community groups. White & Case attorneys also assist with the legal needs of AIDS patients at St. Luke's/Roosevelt Medical Center, and we have undertaken projects on behalf of the national headquarters of the Urban League. We have also advised Conservation International and other environmental groups with regard to debt-for-nature transactions throughout the world.

We strongly believe that pro bono legal activity is in the public interest as well as in the professional interest of our attorneys. Accordingly, we actively sponsor and encourage participation in pro bono work. In evaluating the performance of associates, time devoted to pro bono matters is considered the equivalent of time spent on matters involving our other practice areas.
