Law Students from Moscow State University Win 2012 White & Case
Jessup Cup
A team from Moscow State University won the 2012 White & Case Jessup Cup by finishing first in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. White & Case is a global partner of the Jessup and sponsors the White & Case International Rounds and 12 national and regional competitions worldwide.

Moscow State University faced Columbia University (US) in the championship round, which was held on March 31 in Washington, DC. The win by the Russian team is only the seventh time in the 53-year history of the Jessup that a non-native English speaking team has won the competition.

Following the championship round, Ian Forrester, partner in Brussels and head of our Global Pro Bono Practice, delivered remarks to the 600+ participating students, coaches, judges and spectators. Click here to view the text of his remarks.

White & Case's involvement with the Jessup goes back many years and includes the founding of the first-ever competition in Russia in 2002, now the world's largest national competition with nearly 50 participating universities. In 2012, six Jessup teams advanced to represent Russia in the White & Case International rounds.

Building legal capacity in Bhutan
White & Case is collaborating with the Kingdom of Bhutan on Bhutan’s Royal Law Project. Our work includes setting up a law library, running legal training seminars and providing pro bono advice on topics such as foreign direct investment and corporate law. Starting in 2012, the Firm will also sponsor scholarships to allow Bhutanese students to pursue LLB degrees at Indian universities.

As a result of the collaboration, the first law library in Bhutan, known as the White & Case Law Library, was opened in July 2011. Located in Thimphu, the capital, the library offers access to legal reference databases previously unavailable in the country, as well as legal treatises, statutes, and other law books and materials. Prior to the opening, the Firm provided interactive training sessions on how to use the library's legal reference databases to judges, lawyers and clerks from throughout Bhutan, including from the Supreme and High Courts.

A small nation located in the Himalaya Mountains, Bhutan is undergoing an unprecedented transition from absolute monarchy to democracy, holding its first-ever parliamentary elections in 2007.
