Practice Experience
Mr. Hammond has been with White & Case LLP since 1998 and is a partner in the Firm's Commercial Litigation Practice Group. Mr. Hammond handles complex commercial litigations and arbitrations and has extensive trial experience before US federal and state courts and domestic and international arbitral tribunals. Mr. Hammond's clients have included numerous entities engaged in the financial services, pharmaceutical and other industries as well as foreign governments and governmental entities.
Mr. Hammond's broad range of experience includes representing financial services clients in contractual disputes arising out of financing agreements, inter-creditor agreements, share purchase agreements and derivative instruments. Mr. Hammond also has experience representing and advising clients in federal securities litigation, antitrust litigation, intellectual property litigation, and disputes arising under various state common law and statutory theories. Mr. Hammond has also represented debtors, creditors, and equity holders in complex bankruptcy proceedings.
Prior to joining White & Case, Mr. Hammond served as a law clerk to the Honorable Charles Schwartz, Jr., United States District Judge, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Significant recent experience includes representing:
- A leading satellite manufacturer in connection with an ICC arbitration involving the application of a liquidated damages provision;
- A foreign sovereign entity in connection with billion-dollar breach of contract and fraud claims brought by failed bidder stemming from the acquisition of high-yield securities of a failed California insurance company in a competitive auction process;
- A foreign sovereign entity in connection with a multibillion-dollar civil lawsuit brought by insurance regulator stemming from the acquisition of high-yield securities of a failed California insurance company in a competitive auction process;
- A leading US cable company in connection with a five-week AAA arbitration hearing in a dispute over a customer care and billing contract resulting in an award of US$120 million in damages and approximately US$400 million in pricing relief to the cable company over the remaining term of the contract;
- A professional sports league and member club in the damages phase of a copyright infringement action resulting in a jury verdict of zero dollars for plaintiff; secured summary judgment on behalf of the professional sports league and member club in related consolidated cases involving over 450 defendants alleging damages from use of infringing logo; verdict and judgment upheld on appeal to the 4th Circuit;
- A multinational bank in multi-jurisdictional litigation (US and non-US) arising from the sale of derivative instruments;
- A multinational pharmaceutical company in a civil antitrust action brought by thousands of opt-out plaintiffs.
