Indian tribes have a significant new opportunity to finance commercial developments using tax-exempt bonds and tax-credit bonds, thanks to the recently enacted American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Act enables tribes to issue up to $2 billion of these bonds to finance commercial developments, including hotels, convention centers and other amenities, but not casinos, on Indian reservations. Several factors can influence which of these bonds a tribe should issue. Here are details on this new financing opportunity.
