October 26, 2009
On 26 October 2009, The Legal Aid Society held its 2009 Pro Bono Awards and Law Firm Recognition Ceremony in New York. White & Case associates, Adam Burton, Hessam Ghadaki and Jonathan Ng (New York) and White & Case alum, Eunice Rho, were presented with awards by Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman for their outstanding pro bono service to The Legal Aid Society. The Legal Aid Society's Criminal Practice is the largest public defender organizations in the country and serves as the primary defender in New York City, handling more than 232,000 cases annually. White & Case is one of the six law firms that initiated the Criminal Defense Pro Bono Project, which began last year as a pilot project to provide additional and much needed legal resources to assist Legal Aid attorneys with their enormous caseload. Volunteer lawyers allocate a third of their time over a nine-month period or serve as full-time externs for up to a year. Adam is one of the project's outstanding associates recognized for his conscientious and excellent representation of clients in misdemeanor matters, assistance with felony trials, and the dedication of extra hours to the project. White & Case's General Counsel externship program, created a year and a half ago, provides a full-time lawyer on a three-month rotation to work directly with Janet Sable, General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer of The Legal Aid Society. Hessam, Jonathan and Eunice were awarded by the Society for their pro bono service providing invaluable assistance on a full range of corporate, real estate, insurance, contract and ethics issues. In recognition of the Firm's pro bono commitment to the Legal Aid Society and its clients, White & Case was also named to the Society's Pro Bono Honor Roll.
