Practice Experience
Derval Walsh is a senior associate in the Dispute Resolution group in the London office. He deals with a broad range of contentious matters across the banking and corporate sectors. He has experience of a number of major commercial and banking cases in the English courts, including the High Court and the Court of Appeal. Derval is also a Solicitor Advocate.

In 2004, Derval was seconded to the legal division of a major investment bank where he was involved in a broad range of institutional and retail matters, including several private wealth management and investment management cases in England, Europe and Asia.

Derval joined White & Case in 2006 from a leading UK firm.

Examples of recent representations include:

  • Acting for a life assurance company in Commercial Court proceedings against its former auditors and some of its former directors;
  • Acting for a leading investment bank in Commercial Court proceedings regarding a debt arising out of a transaction on the interbank money market;
  • Acting for a leading investment bank in relation to the criminal and civil issues arising out of the theft of a substantial sum of money by one of the bank’s employees;
  • Acting for a Nevis incorporated hedge fund manager in relation to a derivative claim, and other claims, brought against it in the Chancery Division of the High Court;
  • Acting for a BVI company in connection with its jurisdictional challenge to Isle of Man proceedings concerning the ownership of a Kyrgyz mobile phone company;
  • Advising a sovereign state seeking to oppose the enforcement against it in England of a US judgment; and
  • Acting for an Hungarian corporate purchaser in connection with various warranty and indemnity claims under a share sale agreement regarding the purchase of a majority of the outstanding equity shares in an Austrian telecommunications company.

Derval is also experienced in contentious regulatory matters. Examples of representations include:

  • Acting for a leading investment bank in relation to the FSA investigation into the split capital investment trust sector; and
  • Acting for a private individual in relation to FSA disciplinary proceedings arising out of alleged misconduct during the course of a foreign tax authority audit.
