Affinity Groups—Focusing on characteristics such as race, religion, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation, affinity groups were established to create a forum in which lawyers of similar backgrounds can discuss issues of common interest and develop initiatives for the enhancement of their professional development and career opportunities.
Diversity Speaker Series—With the input of our lawyers, who provided their preference of role models and guest speakers from various spheres, we put together an impressive line-up for our speaker series. Our private receptions have included discussions with Mia Farrow, actress and UN activist on the crisis in Darfur, Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson, Ralph Nader, and Congressman Charlie Rangel among others.
Pro Bono—The Diversity Committee works in tandem with the Pro Bono Group to ensure that our lawyers are being engaged on meaningful matters for diverse communities.
Self-Identification Survey—Completed by lawyers in the New York office, the survey allows us to understand how our lawyers categorize themselves, and which groups they believe are most appropriate and relevant to them so that we can tailor programs specific to their needs. The survey also provides useful information for our client and government mandated reports.
Sponsorships—Addressing diversity issues at the early stages of the pipeline is critical to our efforts. We make it a priority to sponsor and support programs that help improve the education and career guidance of minority students:
- Cristo Rey New York High School—As a participant in Cristo Rey’s unique Corporate Work Study Program, we bring in students to work in our offices, giving them the chance to earn up to 70% of the cost of their education.
- New York County Lawyers' Association's (NYCLA) Minority Judicial Internship Program—Our financial support to NYCLA enables it to provide minority law students with an eight-week paid summer judicial internship with a state or federal judge. Students gain valuable real work experience by drafting memoranda, attending oral arguments and performing legal research. Additionally, they get "hands-on" courtroom experience, learning first-hand how the system works and gaining insight to the decision-making process.
- Practicing Attorneys for Law Students Program (PALS), Inc.—We provide talented minority law students with mentoring, career guidance, and education/networking opportunities through our financial support and the personal commitment of our attorneys who serve as mentors to individual students. Our multi-year pledge enables PALS to carry out its mission of inspiring and empowering law students of color to pursue and successfully navigate the pathway to a legal career.
- Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program—Through this program, we take on promising inner-city high school-aged students to work in our offices, offering them the opportunity to gain practical experience and learn professional skills.
- White & Case Award for Best Student Note at Howard University Law School—An annual monetary award given to the law student at Howard University Law School who writes the best note published in the Howard Law Journal. The award recipient is also nominated for the Burton Foundation Award, a national award honoring both working lawyers and law students for excellence in legal writing.
- White & Case/Orison Marden Fellowship—Established at New York University in honor of Orison Marden, a leading partner at White & Case who served as longtime director and chairman of the board of The Legal Aid Society, this fund supports summer fellowships for 1L students who choose to work in a public interest capacity in developing nation economies and preferably at organizations which focus on the advancement of women and children.
Women's Initiative and Women’s Network—The Diversity Committee works closely with the Women’s Initiative and Women’s Network to plan and execute programs and events for the development and empowerment of women in our workplace.
