Jessup Competition

Jessup and White & Case: two names synonymous with international law. And now, in support of the Jessup mission, White & Case has joined the International Law Students Association (ILSA) as a global sponsor of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, with a focus on the development and support of national and regional Jessup competitions. With active participation and sponsorship in Australia, Canada, China, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and other countries, White & Case also provides financial support to ILSA to encourage the growth of the Jessup in developing countries.

"The Jessup Competition is an excellent training ground for law students from around the world. The Jessup not only provides a challenging intellectual experience but also a cultural one that transcends national boundaries. White & Case recognizes the importance of this mission and is proud to be a global partner of the Jessup."

—Hugh Verrier, Chair of the Firm

White  & Case's involvement with the Jessup goes back many years and is driven by the passion of our many Jessup alumni who believe that the Competition is one of the great learning opportunities for law students and a means to enhance the sense of community among the world’s lawyers. Our role in the Jessup took a giant leap forward in 2002 when our Moscow office, headed by partner Hugh Verrier, now Chair of the Firm, founded the first-ever Russian National Competition. Since then, it has become the largest national Jessup competition in the world. We hope to have the same success in the many other White & Case-sponsored Jessup competitions.

White & Case recognizes the importance of the Jessup as an invaluable tool to develop legal writing and oral advocacy skills, teamwork and substantive knowledge of international law. As the world’s major global law firm, White & Case is proud to play a role in the training of the legal leaders of tomorrow.

White & Case is involved with the following Jessup national competitions:

"For me, participating in the Jessup was a defining experience in my legal education. I learnt a lot about international law, legal writing and oral advocacy during my time at the Jessup.  More importantly, it convinced me to pursue a career in international dispute resolution. I cannot recommend the Jessup experience enough."

—Dipen Sabharwal, Associate, White & Case London Office
Jessup World Champion, National Law School of India University, 1999

"The Jessup Competition was the single most formative activity in which I’ve participated in the past few years. Entirely apart from the incredible amount of international law you absorb, you learn the very best communication skills and become part of a close-knit network of people from all over the world. What makes the Jessup unique is that you  never truly let it go; your teammates can become some of  your closest friends, and you find yourself looking for ways to stay involved year after year, whether as a coach, a judge or even a volunteer bailiff."

—Alka Pradhan, Associate, White & Case New York Office
Jessup World Champion, Columbia Law School, 2006
