Practice Experience
Kairat Baizakov joined the Almaty office of White & Case in 1996. Prior to joining White & Case, Mr. Baizakov worked as a lawyer for the Administration of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Mr. Baizakov also served for several years as a legal advisor at both the Supreme Court and Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Mr. Baizakov's practice is comprised mainly of representing companies and financial institutions in the following practice areas:
  • litigation;
  • mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures;
  • financing (including project finance); and
  • securities offerings.

Mr. Baizakov has advised clients in a number of international debt offerings including the debut issuance of Eurobonds by the Republic of Kazakhstan. Mr. Baizakov has also represented clients on various types of syndicated loans and has extensive experience with respect to projects involving multinational agencies such as the EBRD, IFC, ADB (Asian Development Bank) and DEG (Deutsche Investitions-und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH), among others.

Mr. Baizakov's recent experience in oil and gas sector includes:
  • the privatisation of Shymkent refinery and its subsequent acquisition by Hurricane Hydrocarbons (subsequently Petrokazakhstan) for approximately US$1 billion. The merged entity was the first vertically integrated oil company in Kazakhstan;
  • representing Tengizchevroil in a US$1.1 billion limited recourse bond issue and in a US$3.3 billion pari passu partner loan financing for the expansion of the Tengizchevroil oil project in Kazakhstan with ABN AMRO Bank and Lehman Brothers as Lead Managers;
  • representing KazMunaiGas Exploration Production in its US$2.3 billion offering of shares and Global Depository Receipt listed on London Stock Exchange; and
  • advising BTA Bank and Alliance Bank on their restructuring programmes.

In addition to his corporate and commercial practice, Mr. Baizakov has assisted clients on a variety of litigation matters, including resolution of financial disputes in Kazakhstan courts, and Mr. Baizakov has extensive experience with preparing and filing trademark and patent applications in Kazakhstan, as well as advising clients on trademark infringement.
