Singapore took a step towards liberalisation of its legal sector in 2009 by awarding six international firms including White & Case with a licence to practice Singapore law. Obtaining this Qualified Foreign Law Practice (QFLP) licence is a great privilege as fourteen other law firms were denied the opportunity to practise domestic law with Singapore-qualified lawyers.

White & Case partner, Barrye Wall, said, "The government has had to be very clever on how to capitalise on what resources its got. They were thinking about how to best drive their economy and the legal sector is something they thought would help – although obviously it’s not a big pillar of the economy."
