White & Case Publishes First Ever Online Jessup Guide
Firm Sponsoring Nine National Competitions and Local Teams from Developing Countries
New York,
January 27, 2009 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP today announced the first-ever online guide for participants in the 2009 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. As part of the Firm's redesigned Jessup website (
www.jessup.whitecase.com), the downloadable "White & Case Jessup Guide" is available to help students around the world prepare for and participate in the competition.
Marking its 50th anniversary in 2009, Jessup is the world's largest annual moot court competition, with more than 2,000 law students participating from nearly 90 countries. White & Case is the sole Global Partner of the International Law Students Association (ILSA), administrator of the competition.
"White & Case is pleased to support the development of the world's future lawyers," said White & Case Chairman Hugh Verrier. "International law will play an ever-increasing role in the practice of law around the world, and the knowledge and skills these students are building through the Jessup Competition will position them for long-term success."
The new White & Case Jessup website serves as a clearinghouse for students and judges. The site includes FAQs, competition schedules and results and other key Jessup information. The website also features the White & Case Jessup Guide, a downloadable student-focused "how-to" handbook available at no cost to all Jessup participants. The guide contains recommendations on working with the Jessup Compromis, researching international law, writing Jessup memorials, preparing for Jessup oral pleadings, and leveraging Jessup skills in students' legal careers.
In addition to the new Jessup website and digital reference guide, White & Case in 2009 is sponsoring national Jessup competitions in nine countries – Australia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Georgia, Poland, Russia, South Africa and the United Kingdom – more than any other Jessup sponsor.
Through a contribution to ILSA, White & Case will also be underwriting Jessup teams from developing nations, to be announced at the end of the national competitions in early March. In 2008, the Firm sponsored more than a dozen teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, Guyana, Iraq, Lesotho, Nepal and Vietnam.
"For many law students, the Jessup is their first international experience," added Verrier. "It broadens their worldview and connects them with the global legal community."
Most teams must first compete in national and regional competitions to earn the right to advance to the Jessup World Championship in Washington, DC, on March 22-28. Teams supported by White & Case that qualify for the championship competition will be hosted by the Firm at a reception in Washington, DC, in March.
