Andrew McDougall Returns to White & Case as Partner in Its International Arbitration Practice

Paris, January 13, 2012 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP has appointed Andrew de Lotbinière McDougall as a partner in its Global International Arbitration Practice.

A Canadian and French national, McDougall, who will be based in Paris, is an international arbitration specialist with significant expertise in a wide range of industry sectors, including construction and oil and gas. He rejoins White & Case from Canadian law firm Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall LLP in Ottawa, where he was founder and head of the International Arbitration Group, and will continue as Special Counsel to the firm. Prior to that, he worked at White & Case in Paris from 2000 to 2008, the latter five years as partner. McDougall’s appointment follows on from White & Case's recent promotion of four international arbitration lawyers to partner: Rafael Llano Oddone in Mexico City, Dipen Sabharwal in London, Rikard Wikström in Stockholm and Markus Burianski in Frankfurt. All promotions took effect on January 1, 2012.

Paul Friedland, head of White & Case's Global International Arbitration Practice, said, “Andrew is a great lawyer and a great guy. He excels both at hearings and in lead-up. Our practice is universally delighted that he's back with us. Attesting to the health of our practice, we've added arbitration partners this year in Mexico City, London, Stockholm, Frankfurt and now Paris."

A trained and qualified common and civil law lawyer, McDougall has substantial advocacy experience as counsel in both English and French, as well as regularly sitting as arbitrator. Among many other accolades, he was ranked in Global Arbitration Review's 2011 "45 under 45" as one of the world’s leading international arbitration lawyers under 45. He is a member of the International Chamber of Commerce's Canadian and French National Committees and is on the roster of arbitrators at both the American Arbitration Association’s International Centre for Dispute Resolution and the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada. In addition to his frequent speaking and writing, McDougall has taught international arbitration at University of Ottawa's Faculty of Law and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. He is also a member of the Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy's Executive Committee.

Michael Polkinghorne, head of International Arbitration in Paris, said: "Andrew's return is welcome news to the firm and the Paris office in particular, where our arbitration group now comprises seven partners and two counsel (not to mention our associate base of more than 20). Given our current needs in the construction and energy sectors, where he has a wealth of experience, we have told Andrew not to make any vacation plans for the foreseeable future."
