White & Case To Capitalise On Growing Asia IP Opportunities
Leading intellectual property lawyer David Llewelyn transfers to Singapore
Singapore,
April 23, 2010 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP has boosted its Intellectual Property (IP) offering to clients in Asia with the relocation this month of internationally-renowned Professor David Llewelyn from London to Singapore.
"David's standing within the IP community makes this an important and strategic move for our Intellectual Property practice in Asia," commented Dimitrios Drivas, White & Case partner and head of its Global Intellectual Property practice. "As Asia continues its economic development, intellectual property issues are now an integral part of business strategy, and we are more strongly positioned to assist clients' needs across the region."
As one of the world's leading IP lawyers, David advises on all aspects of IP protection and exploitation, as well as IP and technology arbitration. He will work closely with partners Aloke Ray and Nandakumar Ponniya who relocated to Singapore from London and joined the Firm, respectively, earlier this year to establish an international arbitration practice in Singapore.
David has published and lectured extensively and is the Deputy Chairman and External Director of the IP Academy Singapore, a post he has held since 2007. From 2004 to 2007 he was the Academy's Director. His other regional academic postings include Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Law at the University of Hong Kong and Visiting Scholar at the East China University of Politics and Law in Shanghai.
As well as being co-author of Cornish & Llewelyn on Intellectual Property and of Kerly's Law of Trade Marks and Trade Names (14th ed. 2005), the leading practitioner's textbook on the subject, David recently authored Invisible Gold in Asia – Creating wealth through intellectual property due to be published by Marshall Cavendish later this year.
"The importance of establishing Intellectual Property rights across Asia cannot be underestimated for the region's future growth and prosperity," commented David Llewelyn. "It is only through the encouragement and protection of creativity and innovation that businesses and economies can grow and thrive."
Professor of IP at King's College London, David has been named a "leading individual" in IP by Chambers' Guide to the Legal Profession and has been chosen as one of the top 50 trademark lawyers in the world by Euromoney's Managing Intellectual Property.
David’s relocation strengthens White & Case's Asia-wide IP practice, which already includes a team of two partners, one counsel and six associates based in the Firm's Beijing and Tokyo offices.
