White & Case's Daniel Levin and Benjamin Kwak Receive 2011 Burton Award
Firm is recognized for 10th straight year

Washington, DC, May 18, 2011 ... White & Case partner Daniel Levin and associate Benjamin Kwak have been named recipients of the 2011 Burton Award for Legal Achievement, which is held in association with the Library of Congress. White & Case is the only firm to have won the award 10 years in a row.

Based in Washington, DC, Levin and Kwak are lawyers in the Firm's Global White Collar Practice. They were recognized by the Burton Foundation for their article, "U.S. Authorities Possess Tools, Motivation to Continue to Push the Envelope in Investigating and Prosecuting Financial Crimes," which appeared in the May 31, 2010, issue of BNA's Securities Regulation & Law Report. The article explores how the US Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission are expanding their civil and criminal inquiries into financial institutions and other companies and what this trend may mean to corporate management, boards of directors and audit committees.

"A number of enforcement trends combine to make this an especially perilous time for businesses," said Levin. "The purpose of this article was to alert companies to the government's stepped-up investigations and prosecutions of financial crimes, and the wide range of tools it has at its disposal, and to highlight steps companies can take to avoid missteps that may lead to broader inquiries and potential criminal sanctions."

Now in its 12th year, the Burton Awards recognize the finest in legal writing. Nominations are submitted by law firm managing partners and include exemplary articles that have been published during the past year. Out of the 1,000 largest law firms in the United States, only 30 winners are selected each year.

The submissions were judged by an Academic Board led by Virginia Wise, a renowned teacher at Harvard Law School; Anne E. Kringel, a widely recognized expert in legal writing at the University of Pennsylvania Law School; Grace Tonner, a prominent dean from the University of California Law School at Irvine; Judge Ed Forstenzer, a distinguished judge from California's Superior Court (retired); and William Ryan, a direct descendent of Noah Webster.

Levin and Kwak will be honored at the 2011 Burton Awards ceremony at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, on June 13, 2011. US Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will be the guest speaker of honor for the event, which will also feature a special award to Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer. Bill Press will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.
