White & Case Scores High Marks in Diversity Survey
New York,
May 1, 2008 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP announced today that it scored in the Top 10 of Minority Law Journal's 2008 Diversity Scorecard, ranking No. 6 overall, with 22.5% of its lawyers being people of color.
The Firm was also rated highly in two other survey categories. It ranked No. 2 in having the most Hispanic American lawyers, with 75, and No. 6 in having the highest percentage of minority partners, with 12.5%.
Moreover, the Minority Law Journal reported that it will introduce a new survey methodology for 2009 that ranks firms based on their combined percentages of minority lawyers and partners. The magazine stated that if this year's data were analyzed under the new methodology, White & Case would have ranked No. 5 overall in the survey. "Workplace diversity is a business imperative. We are committed to building a diverse workforce to better represent our diverse community of clients throughout the world," said Elaine Johnston, White & Case executive partner for diversity.
The Diversity Scorecard is drawn from a survey of the nation's largest and highest-grossing firms. They included the 250 biggest firms as ranked by The National Law Journal, as well as four firms that made The American Lawyer's Am Law 200 but did not make the NLJ 250. The numbers are based on detailed demographic information about each firm's attorneys, including an ethnic breakdown. In addition, Minority Law Journal sent its own stand-alone survey to firms to determine the number of minority lawyers working in their US offices, and also asked firms for the first time to describe their diversity efforts.
"The Firm has long been committed to diversity, and we are proud to be publicly recognized for our efforts," said Maxine Williams, White & Case diversity manager. "We've made a lot of progress and are committed to continuing to foster a culture that maximizes opportunities and incentives for all minorities to achieve their full potential while contributing to the success of our clients and the Firm."
In recent months, White & Case has undertaken several initiatives that reflect its commitment to diversity.
- In April, the Firm hosted the first National Asian Pacific American Bar Association's Diversity Symposium in New York, which drew more than 100 attendees from 50 of the nation's top large law firms, including managing partners, hiring partners, and partners responsible for firm diversity, as well as a number of in-house counsel.
- In February, the Firm's "Diversity Speaker Series" featured a guest lecture from former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, who joined a long list of other distinguished speakers in this ongoing program, including actor James Earl Jones, feminist and journalist Gloria Steinem, Albanian Prime Minister Dr. Sali Ram Berisha and actress Mia Farrow.
- In October 2007, White & Case held its first "Minority Lawyers Conference," a two-day retreat of the Firm's minority attorneys worldwide who gathered to discuss ways to advance the Firm's minority programs and policies on recruitment, retention and promotion.
