Public-Private Initiative Helps Associates Hone Their Trial Skills

New York, May 11, 2007 ... White & Case has joined a program run by the New York City Law Department to help the city with legal issues while giving associates an opportunity to gain trial and deposition experience. Greg Starner, an associate in the Commercial Litigation Practice Group at White & Case, has been active with the Law Department's Public Service Program as a Public Service Attorney working in the tort division since April.

"I am getting experience on all aspects of trial practice, from beginning to end, including picking a jury, making opening statements, examining witnesses, arguing motions and more. In just a month, I've already tried two cases, and second chaired another two trials," says Starner, whose work for the Law Department will be completed in June. "What's more, the trial experience comes with the satisfaction of doing public service."

White & Case plans on getting more associates involved in the program, which was formed to lighten the city's growing caseload and resolve some of its budget issues. The Law Department brings together major city law firms and the public sector on a number of initiatives — single cases it gives to firms; deposition-focused training programs, in which associates conduct depositions on the city's behalf; and trial rotation training programs.
