White & Case Recognizes Pro Bono Lawyers

May 29, 2009 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP today announced the recipients of its annual Pro Bono Awards, honoring 19 White & Case lawyers and five client teams for their significant pro bono achievements.
Spanning six countries, the honorees worked on behalf of individuals and non-profits across a range of pro bono matters, including political asylum and human rights cases, as well as litigation, compliance, corporate and tax issues. Last year alone, White & Case represented more than 200 pro bono clients.
"In the current economic environment, individuals and non-profits face tremendous challenges and often have a greater need for pro bono legal services," said White & Case Chairman Hugh Verrier. "By helping those who need it most, this year’s honorees represent the very best of White & Case and the legal profession."
The individual pro bono honorees are:
- Genevra Forwood (Brussels) for her work advising an association of European organizations on new and proposed laws recognizing and promoting "Fair Trade," as well as her work on behalf of a British woman on the issue of reproductive rights and EU and Belgian law.
- Sezgin Baş and Yalın Akmenek (Istanbul) for their work on various estate issues on behalf of LOSEV, a Turkish non-governmental organization providing educational, social and psychological support, as well as free treatment and permanent solutions, for families of children with leukemia.
- Ebru Temizer (Istanbul) for her work on a project led by Bilgi University to provide legal services, including litigation, to women with insufficient financial resources and women suffering from domestic violence.
- Ahu Yalgin (Istanbul) for her continuous legal advice to Tohum Otizm Vakfı, a Turkish Autism Foundation, on various corporate and intellectual property law issues.
- Laura Clement (London) for various pro bono real estate matters, including her work for Solar Aid, the UK’s first solar energy charity for the developing world, and International Rescue Committee UK, the European headquarters of this leading international relief and development organization.
- Aristides Diaz-Pedrosa (New York) for his corporate and transactional work with Qualitas of Life Foundation, a non-profit that provides financial education to Hispanic immigrant families in New York, and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, a New York-based ensemble that promotes young soloists and composers from the Americas.
- Johanna B. Fine (New York) for her work for the Center for Reproductive Rights, a non-profit legal advocacy organization that promotes and defends women’s reproductive rights worldwide, including authoring a report for the center and presenting it at the 2008 International AIDS Conference in Mexico City.
- James Trainor and Amit Thakore (New York) for their work on behalf of a New York individual in a long-running dispute with the Social Security Administration (SSA) over his entitlement to disability insurance benefits.
- Todd Gluckman, Heather Huggins and Mihir Desai (New York) for their representation of an individual in an Article 78 proceeding challenging a New York City decision regarding a home purchase program.
- Craig Clark and Caryn Nutt (Palo Alto) for their work on an asylum case representing an El Salvadoran minor fleeing gang violence in El Salvador.
- Stephanie Casey and Devon Nunneley (Washington, DC) for their work on a successful asylum application for a transgendered individual, a landlord-tenant dispute in which they successfully negotiated a settlement for their tenant clients after preparing the case for trial and conducting mediation and a child custody case.
- Petr Polasek (Washington, DC) assisted the Vaclav Havel Presidential Library, Inc., a non-profit registered in Washington, DC, on various corporate matters, including maintaining its corporate registration.
- Chiara Giorgetti (Washington, DC) for her work representing the State of Eritrea before the Eritrea-Ethiopia Claims Commission in The Hague, in cooperation with Prof. Lea Brilmayer of Yale Law School.
The team pro bono honorees are:
- The Nature Conservancy (Berlin)
Sebastian Prügel, Jörg Kraffel, Falko Daub, Klaus Sturm and Dirk Eisolt for their work with The Nature Conservancy, one of the world’s leading non-profit conservation organizations, in establishing its first European office in Berlin, a project that took more than one year and more than 230 hours of work by nine lawyers.
- "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Litigation," for Log Cabin Republicans (Los Angeles)
Sebyul Chun, Rachel Feldman, Aaron Kahn, Ronald Gorsich, Patrick Hunnius and Daniel J. Woods for their work on the amicus brief in class-action litigation against the US military’s policy on gay and lesbian service members.
- California Proposition 8, for Log Cabin Republicans (Los Angeles)
Earle Miller, Kelly M. Morrison, Aaron Kahn, Amanda Main, Daniel J. Woods, Patrick Hunnius and Rachel Feldman for their work on an amicus brief contesting the constitutionality of Proposition 8, which sought to limit the definition of marriage in California to heterosexual couples.
- Deportation Defense Team (New York)
Rebecca Bodony, Adam Burton, Binoy Dharia, Frank Lupinacci, Marika Maris, Francisco Martinez, William Robertson, Marisa Sotomayor, Yara Tajo, Amanda Taub, Colin West, Antoine Brocas, Helena Lynch, Meeta Anand, Jonathan Michels and Katherine C. Monahan for their work on behalf of more than 30 individuals facing deportation in the United States.
- Acumen Fund Team (New York and Washington, DC)
David Goldstein, Mara Topping, Jeremy Naylor, Mary Burner, Katherine McCullough and Ash Ilkhani for their work with Acumen Fund, Inc., a New York-based non-profit venture capital fund, on the development of a new for-profit venture capital fund targeting investment in small and medium enterprises that provide health, water, housing and energy to customers in South Asia and Africa whose annual per capita income is less than US$1,500.
