White & Case Partner William Dantzler Receives Burton Award
Seventh Straight Year White & Case Is Honored
New York,
June 12, 2008 ... J. William Dantzler, Jr., head of the Tax Practice of global law firm White & Case LLP, has been named a recipient of the 2008 Burton Award for Legal Writing Excellence. Only 30 winners are selected each year from applications received from the nation's 1,000 largest law firms, and Dantzler's selection marks the seventh consecutive year that a White & Case lawyer has won the award.
Dantzler was recognized by the Burton Foundation for his article, "What's the Problem with Carried Interest?" published in Bloomberg Law Reports. The article, which ran in August 2007, addressed the issues of hedge fund and private equity fund managers paying only 15 percent federal tax on their compensation through a structure called "carried interest." Although the preferential federal capital gains tax rate was designed to encourage capital investment, critics say that fund managers earn carried interest through their labor and so should be taxed as regular wage earners.
"What seems like an inequity is actually consistent with the logic of the tax law, and curing the perceived inequity might create real abuse," said Dantzler. "It was a pleasure to explore this controversial issue in the article, which I am honored has been recognized by the Burton Foundation."
Dantzler will be honored at the 2008 Burton Awards program at the Library of Congress on June 16, 2008.
The Burton Awards, now in its ninth year, was founded to select the finest law firm authors and set an example for all other legal writers. The nominations are submitted by managing partners of law firms. The submissions include exemplary articles that have been published during the past year.
The entries are judged by an academic board led by Virginia Wise, a renowned teacher at Harvard Law School; Anne E. Kringel, a widely acknowledged expert in legal writing at the University of Pennsylvania Law School; Grace Tonner, a prominent professor from University of Michigan Law School; Judge Ed Forstenzer, a distinguished judge from California's Superior Court; and William Ryan, a direct descendent of Noah Webster.
