Carolyn Lamm Assumes American Bar Association Presidency
Creates Three Commissions to Address Key Legal Industry Issues

New York, August 4, 2009 ... Carolyn Lamm, an international arbitration and litigation lawyer with White & Case in Washington, DC, took office today as president of the American Bar Association (ABA). She will serve in this capacity until August 2010.

In her acceptance speech, Lamm said: "It is not just the rule of law we are called to strengthen, but the rule of just law. We must continue to build a dynamic and relentless organization dedicated to protecting the rule of law and securing access to justice."

A complete version of Lamm's acceptance speech is available here.

Lamm pointed to several key issues that will command her and the ABA's focus in the coming year, including boosting diversity and making the legal profession better reflect the society it serves, addressing the regulation of lawyers in light of dramatic changes in technology and globalization and helping lawyers displaced and members of the public harmed by the economy.

To that end, Lamm announced the formation of three commissions: Commission on Ethics 20/20, which will consider how ethics rules should change and includes White & Case of counsel Philip Schaeffer as a member; Commission on the Impact of the Economic Crisis on the Profession and Legal Needs, which will address how lawyers can be helped to weather the tough economy and includes White & Case partner Owen Pell as a member; and Diversity Commission, which will look at ways to make the profession more diverse and includes Jo Weiss, White & Case director of Social Responsibility, as a member.

Lamm is past president of the District of Columbia Bar and was named one of the 50 Most Influential Women in America by the National Law Journal in 2007.

In addition to serving in a variety of capacities with the ABA since 1982, Lamm is a council member of the American Law Institute and a board member of the American Turkish Chamber of Commerce, American Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and American Uzbekistan Chamber of Commerce.

Prior to joining White & Case in 1984, Lamm was employed by the US Department of Justice under the Attorney General's Program for Honor Law Graduates and served as a trial attorney in the Fraud Section, Civil Division, before obtaining the position of assistant director, Commercial Litigation Branch, Civil Division.

A native of Buffalo, NY, Lamm received her undergraduate degree from the State University of New York College at Buffalo and her law degree from the University of Miami School of Law.
