White & Case Boosts Sponsorship of Jessup Competition
Firm Steps Up as International Rounds Sponsor; Winners to Receive White & Case Jessup Cup
September 15, 2009 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP and the International Law Students Association (ILSA) today announced the expansion of its sponsorship of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The expanded sponsorship, which runs through 2012, now includes the 2010 White & Case International Rounds and the White & Case Jessup Cup. The Firm will continue to be an ILSA Global Partner, sponsoring national Jessup competitions and providing other material support.
"The Jessup Competition helps the next generation of international lawyers develop skills they will use throughout their careers," said White & Case Chairman Hugh Verrier. "We are pleased to broaden our support of the Jessup globally."
"We are delighted that White & Case has decided to become the International Rounds and Jessup Cup Sponsor," said Leila Sadat, Chairwoman of ILSA. "White & Case brings extraordinary talent, expertise and vision to ILSA, which has been exponentially increasing its global reach over the past decade. ILSA just celebrated its 50th anniversary, and by teaming up with White & Case, ILSA can ensure that the Jessup experience continues to enrich the lives and careers of the world's law students for generations to come."
Jessup is the world's largest moot court competition, with more than 2,000 law students participating each year, representing over 500 schools and more than 80 countries. Students are required to present oral and written arguments on a hypothetical international law case to a simulated International Court of Justice. In 2010, the Jessup Problem addresses "the right to self-determination and the lawfulness of measures taken to protect the economic resources of a state."
Most teams must first compete in national and regional competitions to earn the right to advance to the 2010 White & Case International Rounds, which will be held March 21-27 in Washington, DC. The winning team will take home the White & Case Jessup Cup.
The Firm's involvement with the Jessup goes back many years. It founded the first-ever Jessup national competition in Russia in 2002 and has served as ILSA's sole Global Partner since 2007. In 2009, the Firm sponsored competitions in nine countries: Australia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Georgia, Poland, Russia, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Through a contribution to ILSA, White & Case also underwrote Jessup teams from Cambodia, the Baltic Region, Lesotho, Nepal and Ukraine.
In 2009, the Firm created the first-ever downloadable online guide to help Jessup participants prepare for the competition. The "White & Case Jessup Guide" will be updated for the 2010 competition and feature instructional video clips to assist in the development of oral argument skills. Other sections of the guide include recommendations on working with the Jessup Problem, researching international law, writing Jessup memorials and leveraging Jessup skills in one's legal career. The updated White & Case Guide will be available in October 2009 and downloadable at no cost from the Firm's Jessup website www.jessup.whitecase.com.
