Antitrust Specialist Joy Fuyuno Joins White & Case
Tokyo,
September 18, 2008 ... Antitrust partner Joy Fuyuno has joined global law firm White & Case LLP in its Tokyo office. This latest appointment enables White & Case to further expand its Antitrust/Competition Practice in Asia, a timely development considering China's new antimonopoly law recently came into effect and will have significant impact on the industry both regionally and globally.
This important hire for White & Case anchors the Firm's East Asian Competition Law Practice as Ms. Fuyuno is the only full time experienced antitrust lawyer stationed by any international law firm in Tokyo, giving the Firm's clients an imperative advantage.
"We are delighted to welcome Joy Fuyuno to our practice. Her joining White & Case enhances our East Asian antitrust practice with a full-time antitrust lawyer resident in Tokyo," says Global Chair of the Antitrust/Competition Practice Group, J. Mark Gidley.
In East Asia, the Firm's Antitrust/Competition practice group already has significant presence in the market, with partners Robert Grondine of Tokyo, Xiaoming Li in Beijing and Chris Corr, an International Antitrust partner who splits his time between Bangkok and Beijing. The addition of Ms. Fuyuno complements those existing resources and boosts the group’s already strong position in the region.
"Ms. Fuyuno has extensive experience in antitrust counselling, governmental investigations, and litigation, as well as general commercial litigation," says Robert Grondine, partner of White & Case, Tokyo and Chairman of the Competition Law Task Force, a committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) established to work with the US and Japanese governments with respect to pending amendments to the Japanese Antimonopoly Law.
"In the context of the global coordination and cooperation among competition regimes, strengthened by the work of the International Competition Network (ICN), clients require counsel on the ground that can manage huge internal investigations and develop consistent global strategies in multiple jurisdictions on a simultaneous real time basis," Mr. Grondine said.
Joy Fuyuno commented, "I am thrilled to be joining the leading Global Competition Law Practice at White & Case, which has delivered numerous ground-breaking precedents for clients in the United States, Europe and Asia in the past five years. The Group's integrated and global approach positions it to deliver the highest quality advice and service to clients facing competition law issues in multiple jurisdictions. I am excited to become an integral part of that effort and to expand the group's presence on the ground in Asia for Japanese and other Asian clients, as well as global clients facing the new challenges in Japan, China and elsewhere in the Asian region."
"Our well developed and widely recognised network of Asian offices have been practicing successfully for more than 30 years, and consists of more than 200 lawyers in six offices throughout the region," says White & Case Chairman Hugh Verrier. "Ms. Fuyuno's appointment will help continue to strengthen our East Asian practice and allow for relevant and timely counsel to our clients from and in the region in real time."
Ms. Fuyuno has been in the leadership of the Antitrust Section of the American Bar Association for more than six years. She is currently vice-chair of the Civil Practice and Procedure Committee and formerly served as vice-chair of the International Committee. She is also an administrative officer of the Japan Competition Law Forum. Ms. Fuyuno contributed to joint ABA/IBA comments on Japanese and Chinese competition law developments over the last two years, and she has also been active in advising, writing and speaking on the new Chinese antimonopoly law and related regulations.
Ms. Fuyuno is admitted to practice law in California, and has been resident in Tokyo and registered as a foreign lawyer in Japan (gaikokuho jimu bengoshi) on and off since 2004.
