After the US Department of Justice backed out of its antirust amnesty deal with Stolt Nielsen S.A., a Norwegian-based global transportation company, Stolt turned to White & Case for help. A bold strategy was needed, since this was the first time the DOJ broke its promise on an amnesty deal. White & Case attorneys J. Mark Gidley and Christopher Curran urged Stolt to sue the government to live up to its promises, and, after years of litigation, the US District Court for The Eastern District of Pennsylvania ruled in favor of Stolt. In this article Gidley and Curran discuss their “Crazy Ivan II” strategy and how they won the case for Stolt.
