Awaiting Judge's Decision on Arizona Immigration Battle
July 23, 2010, Fox News
Signed into law in April by Gov. Jan Brewer, Arizona's new immigration law, due to go into effect 29 July 2010, makes it a state crime to lack immigration documents and requires police to determine the immigration status of people they lawfully stop and subsequently suspect are in the country illegally. Although supported by a majority of Arizona residents, the law is not without its critics. The US government filed a challenge to the law and has argued in court that it has the ultimate authority to implement immigration law and policy. Commenting on the case and the issues US District Judge Susan Bolton will need to consider in deciding whether to stop the law, George J. Terwilliger III, head of White & Case's Global White Collar Practice and a former US Deputy Attorney General, spoke with Fox News.
