Practice Experience
Tanneke Heersche joined the Energy, Infrastructure and Project Finance practice group in London in 2004 and relocated to Johannesburg to become Executive Partner of the Johannesburg office in 2005.  Tanneke is co-head of the firm's Global Mining and Metals Group.

Tanneke is highly regarded for her expertise and experience in the mining industry.  She is recognised as a leading legal advisor by Chambers Global (2008) and the UK Legal 500 (2006). She was named as one of the world’s leading mining lawyers in Euromoney Guide to the World’s Leading Energy and Natural Resources Lawyers (2007) and was also highly rated by International Research’s Who’s Who of Mining Lawyers, (2005, 2006).

She has extensive experience in the mining and metals industry with an emphasis on advising on all aspects of the development and financing of mining and other natural resource projects in emerging markets and regularly advises major international mining companies in numerous countries around the world. 

Representative Transactional Experience

  • Advising Vale (Companhia Vale do Rio Doce) on all aspects of the proposed USD 2.1 billion integrated Moatize coal development project in Mozambique;
  • Advising Gold Fields Limited on the project financing of the Cerro Corona copper and gold project in Peru.  This transaction was named Latin American Mining Deal of the Year 2006 by Project Finance Magazine;
  • Advising the Duferco Group on all aspects of its proposed acquisition of the vanadium business of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation;
  • Advised the International Finance Corporation in connection with the establishment of a state owned vehicle by the Government of Mongolia to hold government interests in strategic mining deposits in Mongolia.
  • Advised Gold Fields Limited on the financing of the acquisition by Gold Fields of Bolivar Gold Corporation, a contested acquisition in which Gold Fields ultimately prevailed;
  • Advised Gold Fields Limited on the financing for the proposed acquisition of Barrick Gold’s interest in South Deep, one of the worlds deepest gold mines;
  • Advised international resource group on its acquisition of an interest in South African Samancor Chrome;
  • Advised Office Mines d’Or de Kilo Moto Democratic Republic of Congo on the restructuring of its exploration and development portfolio of projects;
  • Advised Gold Fields Limited on the sale of an interest in the Arctic Platinum project in Finland to North American Palladium;
  • Advised the International Finance Corporation and the Government of Mozambique in connection with the US$123 million tender of an exploration concession for the Moatize coal project in Mozambique; and
  • Advised an international consortium in connection with its £3.6 billion steel offtake transaction with Corus Group.
