Practice Experience
Tallat is senior environmental counsel in our Energy Infrastructure, Project and Asset Finance Group in London. She has over 15 years of public and private sector experience in Canada, US, UK and further afield. Tallat has advised corporate and financial sector clients on various aspects of carbon trading and has advised governments on emissions trading legislation. Her environmental experience includes representation of major oil and gas companies on environmental compliance, including climate change programmes, permitting, and various international environmental assessment requirements. She has advised lenders and project developers in CDM and JI projects, as well as providing advice to project participants under the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme. Tallat received her LLM in international finance, economics and environmental law from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where her thesis was on mechanisms for making the Kyoto Protocol work. Tallat has taught International Trade and Environmental Law at American University in Washington, DC and continues to speak and write extensively on various environment and energy related issues, including carbon trading.
Representative examples of Tallat's experience include:
- Representation on all environmental aspects of corporate transactions on behalf of buyers, sellers, investors and lenders, in mergers and acquisitions, asset and share purchase transactions, leases and commercial property, and project development, in various jurisdictions, including due diligence and liability issues.
- Representation of North America's largest hazardous waste management company, in connection with all aspects of regulatory approvals and environmental assessment hearings for various projects.
- Representation of mining companies in North America, Africa, Australia and elsewhere on a variety of environmental and regulatory matters, including EIA, hazardous materials management and environmental contamination issues, OHS, transportation of dangerous goods, energy issues, Equator Principles compliance and compliance with international guidelines, standards and best practices.
- Representation of major oil and gas companies on environmental compliance, including climate change programmes, permitting, and various international environmental assessment requirements.
- Representation on various environmental issues for companies in the pulp and paper and forestry industries, petrochemical companies, steel manufacturers and aluminum refineries, and various other major industrial and manufacturing companies in Canada and the US, as well as the Middle East and Asia.
- Representation of lenders and project developers in Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation projects under the Kyoto Protocol, as well as providing advice to project participants under the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme.
- Representation of a major income funds and pension funds in their acquisition of renewable power portfolios including wind, hydro electricity, biomass and landfill gas.
- Representation of a major power generation and wholesale marketing company on emissions reduction and trading agreements and rolling out carbon reduction schemes.
- Representation of project developers and financial institutions in monetising various green attributes, including carbon credits, including in the development of emissions reduction purchase agreements.
- Government advisory roles in North and South America, in various sectors, including emissions trading, electricity regulation and trade and environment issues.
- Representation of various independent power producers and utilities on energy regulatory and environmental considerations of hydro-electric and other forms of renewable power generation projects such as biomass and waste-to-energy, including power purchase agreements.
- Representation of various financial institutions in connection with environmental and regulatory issues in wind power project financings in the North America.
