Global law firm White & Case LLP was recognized as one of the top international arbitration practices worldwide in 2013 by Global Arbitration Review at its seventh annual awards ceremony, held in Paris on February 12, 2014.
White & Case received the award for "Large International Arbitration Practice that Impressed in the Past Year" and again placed second globally in the Global Arbitration Review 100 ("GAR 100"), a guide to the world's leading 100 international arbitration practices. The methodology used to determine the GAR 100 is based principally on the number and value of pending cases and hearings over 2012 and 2013. The survey highlighted the Firm's large case load valued at US$86 billion, including multiple "bet-the-company" cases.
According to Global Arbitration Review, "White & Case should be the winner. The firm had a remarkable year in 2013, including winning a US$550 million award against the Republic of the Congo, helping Peru defeat a series of ICSID claims and winning the landmark dismissal of a treaty claim against Uzbekistan on grounds of corruption."
In addition, White & Case's landmark victory for Uzbekistan in Metal-Tech v Uzbekistan (the first-ever investment treaty claim before ICSID to be dismissed on corruption grounds) was nominated for "Most Important Published Decision of 2013 in Jurisprudential Terms," and the newly-established Paris Arbitration Rules (spearheaded by Michael Polkinghorne and Charles Nairac of White & Case) were nominated for "Innovation by an Individual or Organization." That award went to the Paris Very Young Arbitration Practitioners, of which Diana Bowman of White & Case is a founding member, for its Young Arbitrators' Match (an arbitration award writing competition for practitioners).
The commentary of the GAR 100 describes White & Case's practice as "first class… hardworking and well organized" (client comment), "so well-established it has repeat customers," and having "a reputation around the market as a fearsome opponent. Deservedly – hence the examples of pioneering work." It also highlights White & Case's string of successes in 2013, including our victories for Peru, Uzbekistan and TECO Energy in a series of ICSID arbitrations, and for Commisimpex and Bulgaria in two commercial arbitrations.
The Global Arbitration Review awards ceremony was held in conjunction with the 17th Annual International Bar Association (IBA) International Arbitration Day in Paris. In his role as Co-Chair of the IBA Arbitration Committee, Paul Friedland, White & Case's Global Head of International Arbitration, gave the concluding remarks at the IBA International Arbitration Day before 900 attendees. White & Case also hosted a large cocktail reception in our Paris office for more than 500 international arbitration practitioners worldwide.
The White & Case International Arbitration Group was established over 25 years ago and repeatedly has been recognized at the top of its field worldwide.
