About this book
Jim Hurlock was a remarkable man. So remarkable that we decided during the production of the Firm’s history book we launched last year to write this separate book about Jim because we realized early on we wouldn’t be able in a 300-page book to devote proper attention to either the impact Jim had on the Firm by taking it global or the many contributions he made to it.
When Jim became Chair in 1980, the Firm had about 150 lawyers in its New York office and 35 in five much smaller offices. Almost all of its lawyers were U.S. nationals, and almost all of its clients were U.S. entities. When he stepped down as Chair 20 years later, the Firm had a much different look: more than 1,000 lawyers of more than 60 nationalities, 31 offices in 24 countries, including all of the world’s major commercial and financial centers, and a multinational client base; a truly global law firm.
On a more personal level, the book highlights notable events in Jim’s life before he joined White & Case in 1959, his strong commitment to organizations and causes in the community and the world at large, and the personal attributes and characteristics that defined Jim and made him the great leader that he was.
We are pleased to make the book available to everyone at the Firm as a downloadable ebook that may also be shared with those you know outside the Firm.
