World in transition: Expectations for the new US administration

The Biden administration began on January 20, 2021. For its first two years, Congressional power will be closely balanced between Democrats and Republicans. The House of Representatives will have a slim Democratic majority while the Senate will be equally divided between both parties with the Vice- President casting the deciding vote in the case of a tie.

As a result, Biden administration initiatives that require Congressional action will need to attract some level of Republican support, but the ability to enact major policy change by legislation will likely be difficult. There are also, however, areas in which the administration may act directly by executive authority to implement change and redirect US policy.

White & Case will host a five-part series of forums focusing on the Biden administration to outline how US policy may change. Our series starts with a February 24 keynote event, co-hosted by the America-Japan Society, Inc. and featuring the following speakers, who discuss a broad survey of US-Japan relations:

  • Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki (President of the America-Japan Society, Inc. and former Japanese Ambassador to the US),
  • Ambassador Paul W. Speltz (Chairman and CEO of Global Strategic Associates, LLC), and
  • Professor Haruo Shimada (Professor Emeritus, Keio University, and Chairperson of Tokyo Metropolitan Public University Corporation).

Thereafter, our series will cover new directions in antitrust enforcement, the nexus between technology and regulation, goals for clean energy and infrastructure development, and the new trade agenda. Please refer to the descriptions below for details about each event.

Our forums will take place during the first several weeks of the Biden administration to provide an up-to-date, real-time view of how US policy is beginning to take shape and how it is likely to unfold. We look forward to welcoming you to the discussion.
