White & Case Advises on Three Deals of the Year
February 1, 2007, Latin Finance

Three deals on which White & Case advised were recently named "Deals of the Year" by Latin Finance magazine. The Satmex restructuring garnered the "Best Restructuring Transaction" honor, the CVRD debt offering won the "Best Corporate Bond" title, and the Olmos PPP Project in Peru won the "Best Project Finance Deal" accolade.

In the CVRD debt offering, White & Case advised the joint bookrunners of a syndicate of underwriters in an SEC- registered public offering of $3.75 billion of debt securities by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), the world's largest iron ore mining company. This transaction is the largest ever debt offering by a Latin American company in the global capital markets. Additionally, it was the first sale of securities of a Latin American issuer under the SEC's recently adopted registration rules. The White & Case deal team was lead by Mark Bagnall in Miami, Martin Glass in New York and Don Baker in São Paulo.

For the Satmex matter, the Firm, led by partner Thomas Heather, helped resolve a complex three-year negotiation process involving Mexico's leading satellite service provider, Satélites Mexicanos, with its creditors and shareholders. This agreement enabled Satmex to follow through with their plans to launch the Space Systems/Loral-built Satmex 6 satellite, which is one of the region's largest and most powerful satellites, without having to raise cash through external financing.

In what was the first ever private-public partnership project financing in Peru, the Firm acted as international legal counsel to Concesionaria Trasvase Olmos, which was granted financing of $247 million to develop the Olmos water diversion project on the northern coast of Peru. Miami-based Carlos Viana was lead partner.
