Innovative German PPP Wins Deal of the Year

At the Project Finance International EMEA awards on January 25, 2007 the Essen Proton Therapy Centre was named “PPP Deal of the Year.” White & Case served as legal counsel to Deutsche Bank and Fortis Bank, both of whom served as mandated lead arrangers for the financing of the €300 million Essen project.

The project reached its financial close on June 28, 2006. It provides for the design, construction, financing and maintenance of a proton therapy centre for cancer medication in Essen, Germany.

A truly one-of-a-kind project, it is the first true German PPP with investments over €100 million; the  first PPP funded cancer medication facility worldwide; the first German PPP involving institutional equity and senior debt financing; and the first German PPP in the hospital sector, providing a blueprint for future projects.

Ulf Kreppel served as lead partner and advised on the finance aspects of the deal along with Sabine Schomaker and Julia Müller.  Antje Mattfeld and Josef Große Honebrink also worked on the project.
