Practice Experience
Bengt Åke Johnsson specializes in arbitration; finance, including ship, aircraft and asset finance; oil and gas, shipping; insurance and reinsurance; and corporate law. He has represented parties in numerous international and domestic arbitrations under the rules of the SCC, ICC and UNCITRAL, as well as ad hoc. These arbitrations have involved Swedish, Finnish, Swiss, Polish, Lithuanian, Russian, Croatian, Italian, German, English, American, South Korean, Mongolian, Danish, Austrian, Liberian and Panamanian entities. Mr. Johnsson also has significant experience acting as an arbitrator.
Bengt Åke also has a strong non-contentious practice experience. He has more than 25 years of experience in shipping, building of tankers and oil rigs, trading of crude and petroleum products contracts relating to construction projects in the oil, gas and electrical power industry. He has also a considerable experience in financing transaction, including structure finance. In addition, in his corporate practice, Mr. Johnsson advises Swedish companies with international operations.
Prior to joining White & Case in May 2001, Bengt Åke was a founding partner of Johnsson & Johnsson Advokatbyrå in Stockholm.
Bengt Åke recent experience includes:
- Representing a Thai electronic equipment manufacturer in ICC arbitration defending a claim in the sum of US$10 million by an European mobile telephone manufacturer relating to recalls of telecom equipment.
- Representation of a major Russian oil company in an arbitration in Stockholm under the SCC rules against an Estonian company regarding claims related to deliveries and storage of oil.
- Representation of a Russian company in an SCC arbitration in Stockholm against a Swiss company over alleged claims arising out of the operations of an aluminum producer worth US$380 million.
- Representation of a Russian company in an SCC arbitration in Stockholm against a Western European company over claims arising out of the operations of an aluminum producer worth US$360 million.
- Representation of a European insurance company in an ad hoc arbitration in Stockholm relating to liability issues arising out of the World Trade Centre attacks worth US$150 million.
- Representation of a Swedish biotech company in an SCC arbitration in Stockholm against an English company over a dispute arising out of the sale and purchase of a vaccine worth US$20 million.
- Representation of a sovereign state in litigation in the Swedish courts over a dispute relating to the annulment of an arbitral award worth US$16 million.
- Representation of a Russian company in an SCC arbitration in Stockholm arising out of the termination of a sale and purchase contract for deliveries of raw materials worth US$9 million.
- Representation of a Nordic insurance company in significant reinsurance arbitrations.
- Acting as arbitrator under the ICC Rules in a significant arbitration between the central bank of an Eastern European country and a US company.
Prior to joining White & Case in May 2001, Bengt Åke was a founding partner of Johnsson & Johnsson Advokatbyrå in Stockholm.
