Practice Experience
Bertrand Liard heads the Intellectual Property and Information Technology practice in Paris, offering services in both contentious and non-contentious domains.

Bertrand has extensive experience in Intellectual Property, advising clients in IP rights protection, use and development (licenses in and out, R&D agreements) and enforcement (infringement and fight against piracy), as well as in Information Technology and the Internet, particularly in sourcing and outsourcing transactions and Internet litigation. He has a wealth of experience in handling IT regulatory matters (personal data and privacy protection, on-line advertising and gaming), especially in an international context. In addition, he regularly advises clients on complex contractual arrangements, such as strategic alliances and partnerships.

His clients include global financial institutions, travel providers, social media companies, leading luxury brands, pharmaceutical, mining and industrial companies, as well as many other multinational corporations.

Representative transactions include:
  • Advising several international companies in relation to privacy and personal data management issues, including notification requirements, intra-group transfers, and use of data in cross-borders litigations and investigations;
  • Advising Facebook in all pre-litigation and litigation matters involving France;
  • Advising Rail Solutions (SNCF group) on the setting-up and commercialization of a new reservation and distribution system for high speed passenger trains, including negotiation of agreements with software providers and integrators, and agreements with customers;
  • Advising Christian Dior Couture in relation to their e-commerce platform hosting agreement;
  • Advising Informatique CDC on various IT disputes and contractual arrangements;
  • Advising Altis Semiconductor, on the negotiation of license agreements and commercial contracts;
  • Advising Saint-Gobain on various technology transfer agreements and IP issues; and
  • Advising SMFG (a joint-venture between BHP Billiton and Newmont Mining) in relation to the drafting of a set of standard commercial contracts.

Bertrand joined White & Case in 2007 from another major international law firm. Chambers Global ranks him as "up and coming" and states that he is "a budding star of the profession."
