Law Students From Australian National University Win 2010 White & Case Jessup Cup
More than 100 teams from 76 countries competed in the International Rounds, making it the largest in Jessup's 51-year history
Washington, DC,
March 30, 2010 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP announced today that a team of law students from Australian National University (Canberra) won the 2010 White & Case Jessup Cup as part of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. Winning team members were Ellen Chapple, Sarah Lynch, Rohan Kapur, Samuel Thorpe and Sneha Rangnath. With 127 teams competing from 76 countries, the competition marked the largest International Rounds in the 51-year history of the Jessup.
"I was impressed by the oral arguments of both teams in the final round," said White & Case Chairman Hugh Verrier. "White & Case is proud to support the Jessup and the talented law students who participate in the competition around the world."
Australian National University faced Columbia University Law School (New York) in the championship round, which was held March 27 at the Capital Hilton in Washington, DC. Judging the final round were leading legal luminaries Judges Stephen M. Schwebel and Dame Rosalyn Higgins, both former presidents of the International Court of Justice, and Harold Koh, legal advisor to the US State Department.
Jessup is the largest moot court competition in the world. Administered by the International Law Students Association (ILSA), the event attracts more than 2,000 law students from over 80 countries each year. This year more than 550 teams competed in national and regional competitions. Students are required to present oral and written arguments on a hypothetical international law case to a simulated International Court of Justice. This year's Jessup Problem addressed issues of sovereignty, the right to self-determination and the lawfulness of measures taken to protect the economic resources of a state.
In addition to sponsoring the International Rounds and the Jessup Cup, White & Case sponsored 10 competitions this year, including nine national competitions held in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Georgia, Poland, Russia, South Africa and the United Kingdom, as well as the US regional competition held in Washington, DC. White & Case also helped underwrite participation in the International Rounds of teams from Ethiopia, Lesotho, Nepal and South Africa.
White & Case's involvement with the Jessup goes back many years and includes the founding of the first-ever competition in Russia in 2002, now the world's largest national competition, with more than 55 participating universities. In 2007, the Firm became ILSA's Global Partner and since then has sponsored 33 Jessup competitions.
