White & Case to Strengthen its Finance Capabilities in Asia
London Finance Partner David Barwise to Move to Singapore
Singapore, London,
November 12, 2010 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP will bolster its English law finance capabilities in Singapore and the broader Asia region with the relocation of partner David Barwise from London. Barwise, who will be making the move to Singapore in February 2011, will join White & Case's Asia Banking, Capital Markets & Restructuring Practice. Barwise joins a team of 12 finance partners across White & Case's five offices in Asia.
An Australian who is qualified in English law, Barwise has expertise across a broad range of general structured lending, including real estate finance, as well as structured products such as derivatives, tax structured products, securitizations, CDOs and repackagings. During his career he has been particularly active in emerging markets. His move further demonstrates White & Case's commitment to Asia and to balancing strong English law finance capabilities alongside US and local law (where permitted) capabilities to support clients' needs that began with John Hartley's arrival in 2008 and has steadily expanded since then.
"David has been spending an increasing amount of time in Asia the past couple of years, and his move will allow him to be a focal point for building even stronger links between Asia and London for our financial institution clients," said Hartley, who leads White & Case's Banking, Capital Markets & Restructuring practice in Asia. "It also follows what we have been seeing with our banking clients in London, many of which have relocated personnel to Asia. Since many of David's client contacts are now based in Asia, where they are better located for originating business in Asia, the Middle East and Russia, his move is well aligned with the needs of our clients."
Barwise's relocation will take White & Case's Singapore office to its greatest size in more than five years. His arrival will increase the number of finance partners in the Singapore office to four.
"Singapore continues to grow in strength as a choice location for Asian financial activity," said Barwise. "Confidence in the region is strong and financial flows into, out of and across the region continue to increase. Asia is a key market for our clients and ourselves and is only going to become more important. We fully expect to continue to extend the capabilities of our practice to meet this growing demand."
White & Case has more than 30 years' experience advising clients doing business across Asia, as well as advising clients from Asia doing business worldwide.
