Carolyn Lamm to Head American Bar Association
, Washington, DC
February 11, 2008 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP today announced the nomination of partner Carolyn B. Lamm as president-elect nominee of the American Bar Association, the largest voluntary professional organization in the world.
Lamm, a litigator in the Firm's Washington, DC, office who is globally prominent in international arbitration, trade matters and cross-border commercial litigation, was selected yesterday by the ABA Nominating Committee during the association's mid-year meeting in Los Angeles. It is expected that she will be formally selected president-elect by the ABA House of Delegates in August when it meets during the association's Annual Meeting in New York City.
She will serve as president-elect starting at the end of the Annual Meeting, and then will automatically become president of the 413,000-member association for a one-year term starting in August 2009, succeeding the next incoming president H. Thomas Wells, Jr.
White & Case's Chairman Hugh Verrier hailed Lamm's election as an outstanding achievement in a career marked by numerous professional honors and victories on behalf of clients around the world. "For many years, Carolyn has been a leader within White & Case, the Washington, DC legal community and the American Bar Association," Verrier said. "The ABA will benefit from Carolyn's energy, wisdom and international experience."
Lamm has previously served as president of the District of Columbia Bar, has been a member of the ABA's policy-making House of Delegates since 1982, and served on the Board of Governors from 2002-05. She currently is a member of the Standing Committee on Membership and the board of directors of the ABA Museum of Law. In 1995, she chaired the Standing Committee on Federal Judiciary, which vets the US president's nominees to the bench. She also chaired the Young Lawyers Division in 1982. Additionally, she has held various leadership positions in the sections of Business Law, International Law, Litigation and Public Contract Law.
"I plan to focus on building membership in all segments of the association — including government, public interest, corporate counsel, solos, young lawyers, and lawyers from both small and large firms," said Lamm. "It is also personally important to me to increase diversity within the legal profession, increase advocacy to assure access to justice and to protect the Rule of Law."
A White & Case partner since 1984 and a member of the Firm's Partnership Committee, Lamm concentrates on international arbitration, trade matters and commercial litigation and has substantial experience in federal court litigation, administrative law and government contracts. She was appointed by President Clinton to the US Panel of Arbitrators for International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and, later, by the Government of Uzbekistan to the Uzbek Panel of Arbitrators for ICSID. She is a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the American Arbitration Association and has served as an AAA arbitrator.
Lamm is the recipient of numerous legal awards. In 2006, The National Law Journal
named Lamm as one of its "50 Most Influential Women Lawyers," and the year before that, she was recognized by The National Law Journal
as one of the "100 Most Influential Lawyers in America." In 2002, the Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia named her "Woman Lawyer of the Year."
Prior to joining White & Case, Lamm was employed by the US Department of Justice under the Attorney General's Program for Honor Law Graduates and served as a trial attorney in the Fraud Section, Civil Division, before obtaining the position of Assistant Director, Commercial Litigation Branch, Civil Division.
