White & Case Strengthens its International Arbitration and Construction Capabilities with Arrival of Partner Phillip Capper
London,
March 20, 2008 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP is strengthening its existing London and global international arbitration and construction capabilities with the arrival of partner Phillip Capper. Phillip currently heads the worldwide international arbitration practice at Lovells. He specializes in international arbitration, with a particular focus on engineering, construction and infrastructure.
Phillip brings with him considerable experience in complex cross-border disputes in multiple jurisdictions, including Switzerland, India, Kuwait, Egypt, France, Jamaica and England. This experience, spanning the roles of adviser, advocate, mediator, legal assessor and arbitrator, relates to complex engineering, technology, electrical and mechanical procurement issues and infrastructure projects. He also has substantial experience in construction contract drafting, particularly in the building, civil engineering and rail sectors.
"It is inevitable that the current global infrastructure boom will lead to an increase in international arbitration matters in this sector. Phillip is a renowned expert in the engineering, construction and infrastructure fields, making him a much sought after individual. His extensive experience in these areas, combined with his ties to the ICC and the Middle East and India — markets that are of increasing importance to the arbitration community — make him a significant addition to our team and a great asset to our clients," commented John Bellhouse, partner and head of White & Case's London Dispute Resolution Practice.
Phillip has chaired International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) and United Nations Commission on International Trade Law arbitral tribunals, as well as serving as sole arbitrator and party appointed arbitrator in ICC and LCIA arbitrations. As counsel he has acted under the rules of the ICC, LCIA and the Stockholm, Madrid and Prague Chambers of Commerce.
"This is a great opportunity. My twin specialties of international arbitration and infrastructure projects are a perfect fit with White & Case," added Phillip.
White & Case's International Arbitration Practice comprises 170 practitioners, including 38 partners, and has arbitration centers in London, New York, Paris, Stockholm, Washington DC and Hong Kong, with significant practices in Moscow, Tokyo and elsewhere. In the latest edition of the annual
International Who's Who of Commercial Arbitration, published by Who's Who Legal, eight White & Case partners were featured, and the Firm was named as one of the top three "global players" in arbitration. The Practice was also named "International Arbitration Team of the Year" at the
Chambers USA Awards 2007.
The Firm's Construction and Engineering Group works with international contractors and owners of projects, including sovereign states and state-owned entities, in dispute adjudication boards and similar procedures and in international construction arbitrations around the world. The team offers both project development and dispute resolution services.
"Phillip will be a first class addition to our team. His arrival reinforces our commitment to maintaining and strengthening our international arbitration capabilities in the leading practice centers," added Paul D. Friedland, global co-head of White & Case's International Arbitration Practice.
