White & Case To Host Sustainable Energy Conference

White & Case Celebrates First Sixth Months in Bucharest

Bucharest, September 30, 2008 ... Global law firm White & Case LLP will mark the first six months of its Bucharest office on October 1, 2008 by hosting a conference to discuss the future of nuclear and renewable energy in Romania. Romania — Who Has the Power? Lessons Learned from the US, Romania and Others in Nuclear and Renewable Energy will bring together leading policy makers and heads of industry for an informed debate on past experiences and the challenges ahead for the Romanian energy sector.

"The issues of nuclear and renewable energy have been in the spotlight as economies and businesses across the world consider how markets will adapt to climate change. As the Romanian political and business community starts to develop the power projects of the future, this conference should provide us with a unique opportunity to take a moment's pause to consider the lessons learned to date," commented Todd Shollenbarger, executive partner for White & Case in Bucharest. "We are seeing many new types of energy projects being agreed upon in Romania. In the coming months and years we will see the launch of a number of new wind, nuclear and other sustainable schemes and investments. In fact, based on the current trajectory, many commentators believe Romania has the potential to become the Saudi Arabia of wind energy in the next ten years."

White & Case opened its 37th office worldwide in Bucharest in February 2008, having been active in Romania for a number of years without a physical presence there. The office is part of White & Case's larger network in Central and Eastern Europe which includes offices in Budapest, Warsaw, Prague, Moscow, Bratislava and Almaty. Since February the initial team of 10 lawyers in Bucharest has doubled in size and now comprises 20 lawyers working at the forefront of the region's most significant deals. The team is focused on real estate, capital markets, energy, finance, M&A and private equity.

"Romania is an important market for us and for our clients. Our office in Bucharest is uniquely placed to work in unison with our other offices in Central and Eastern Europe and those further afield to provide our clients with the best possible service," commented Jan Matejcek, executive partner for White & Case in Central and Eastern Europe. "The Romanian market has enormous potential and is on an upward trajectory. All our CEE offices are among the leaders in their respective markets, and our ambition is to achieve a similar position in Romania as well. We are excited about the opportunities ahead of us."

The conference will be followed by a reception to be hosted at the Romanian Palace of Parliament. Confirmed speakers and panelists at the conference include:
  • George Constantin Paunescu, President, Alliance of the Romanian Employers' Association
