On 15 January 2008, the Competition Directorate of the European Commission (DG COMP) opened a sector inquiry into the European pharmaceutical industry. At that time, DG COMP said it had started an inquiry to examine both the reasons behind fewer new products being brought to market and delays to generic entry. DG Comp issued its Preliminary Report on 28 November 2008 and its Final Report on 8 July 2009 - see Final Report.
