Practice Experience
Joseph Angland joined White & Case in 2008 and is a member of the Global Antitrust/Competition Group.

Before joining White & Case, Mr. Angland practiced for 32 years, including serving as Co-Chair of the Antitrust Practice Group at a prominent New York law firm. In 2007, Mr. Angland served as Chair of the ABA's Section of Antitrust Law, the world's largest association of competition lawyers. His prior work for the Antitrust Section includes serving as the principal editor of Antitrust Law Developments, the Section's principal treatise on antitrust law. He is listed as among the leading antitrust lawyers in the United States in Global Competition Review's Who's Who Legal, in Chambers USA, in Woodward/White's Best Lawyers in America, and by Practical Law Institute. Mr. Angland was named one of Lawdragon's 500 Leading Litigators in the United States, a New York Super Lawyer, and one of the top 100 lawyers in New York. At the request of the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, he has served as an advisor to the International Competition Network, the organization of the world's antitrust enforcement agencies.

Mr. Angland has counseled and represented clients in a variety of industries, including most significantly the automobile, pharmaceutical, financial services and semiconductor industries. He has litigated jury and non-jury cases before federal and state courts and has handled administrative matters before the Federal Trade Commission.

Mr. Angland's significant matters include (both prior to and since joining White & Case):
  • Representation of Sandoz Inc. in nationwide litigation relating to Medicaid reimbursement;
  • Representation of Lek Pharmaceuticals in an antitrust action alleging the use of baseless patent litigation to forestall competition in a pharmaceutical market;
  • Representation of DaimlerChrysler Corp. in an action under Sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Act in a case involving essential facilities and conspiracy to monopolize claims;
  • Representation of the Girl Scouts of the USA, successfully obtaining a dismissal of an antitrust action that alleged a conspiracy to injure a supplier;
  • Representation of major regional telephone companies, successfully obtaining a denial of class certification and dismissal of claims under the Communications Act of 1996 and the Sherman Act relating to access charges for long distance calls;
  • Representation of a leading producer of alcoholic beverages in an investigation of its distribution practices by a state attorney general;
  • Representation of Chrysler Corp. in a tying action under Section 1 of the Sherman Act. Obtained summary judgment, and successfully defended it before the Third Circuit sitting en banc;
  • Representation of a special committee of the board of a corporation involved in a major criminal proceeding brought by the US Department of Justice;
  • Providing antitrust counsel to numerous companies in many industries, including advising SEMATECH, a consortium of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers, since its inception in 1986;
  • Representation of Novartis in its multi-billion dollar acquisition of an interest in Alcon;
  • Representation of Chrysler Corp. on antitrust issues in connection with its merger with Daimler-Benz;
  • Representation of an underwriter in securities cases arising from the bond defaults by the Washington Public Power Supply System; and
  • Representation of Fannie Mae at trial of two federal income tax cases, successfully obtaining nine-figure judgments in each of them.
