Practice Experience
Jean-Paul Tran Thiet heads the Paris EU, Competition and Regulatory Practice. He specializes in EU and French Competition law and regulated industries, such as telecommunications, energy, and transport.
Jean-Paul capitalizes on his experience of more than thirty years in these areas. Before entering the legal practice in 1992, he has held top-ranking positions as a high official in both Paris and Brussels including as:
- Advisor to the French Prime Minister;
- Advisor, and then Co-Director to the private office of the Deputy Minister responsible for European Affairs;
- Head of department at the SGAE (Secretary General for European Affairs, Prime Minister's Office); and
- Advisor to the private office of the Vice-President of the European Commission.
Jean-Paul's current activities notably include advising businesses in Europe and in France experiencing competition-related problems (agreements and concerted practices, dominant positions, mergers, state aids, etc.), in particular companies
- That are subject to dawn raids;
- That are asked to provide information or complete questionnaires;
- That received a statement of objections;
- That want to challenge a decision condemning them or conversely companies intending to complain against anticompetitive practices they are suffering.
In such cases, he helps clients to better understanding and managing competition-related proceedings, before the French Competition Authority, the EU Commission, as well as before national and EU courts.
Jean-Paul provides assistance in merger control notifications, both in Paris ad Brussels, and in State aid.
His activity includes assistance in all other fields of European law, negotiating and drafting contracts, and assistance in setting up national and international co-operation and distribution networks. He advises clients in negotiating and applying European and national laws in system industries, notably in relation to the liberalization of the electricity and gas markets, telecommunications and broadcasting, transport (air, rail, sea, and urban transportation), and postal services.
