Jason’s extensive experience in commercial litigation and international arbitration, which spans more than 18 years, helps him to provide knowledgeable representation in a wide range of claims.

Recognized for his skill resolving complex disputes, clients value his support in claims relating to such matters as joint ventures, breaches of contract, derivatives, fraud, breach of trust/fiduciary duties and contentious insolvency.

Jason has represented clients before all divisions of the English High Court, the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court and the Privy Council, as well as before many overseas courts and arbitral tribunals (both ad hoc and institutional). He has developed a particularly significant track record in disputes involving parties from Russia and the former CIS states.

As well as his experience handling international and multijurisdictional claims, he also offers the benefit of his varied sector knowledge, handling disputes in such industries as banking and finance, telecommunications, power and oil & gas.

Experience

Financial institutions:
Major European investment bank

Jason acted for a major European investment bank in the defence of claims for more than €150 million, relating to a performance bond. The matter raised complex jurisdictional and conflicts of law issues in both the French and English courts.

Large financial institution

Jason represented the claimant, a large financial institution, in parallel proceedings in London and New York, to enforce disputed payment obligations totalling more than US $500 million, under a swap agreement with another financial institution.

European investment bank

Jason acted for a European investment bank in High Court proceedings against a Russian-owned company for breach of a share option agreement. His work on this matter included obtaining without-notice freezing injunctions against the defendant in England and Bermuda, to freeze its assets worldwide.

Energy and mining clients:
State-owned oil and gas company

Jason acted for a state-owned oil and gas company in proceedings in the English Commercial Court and Court of Appeal, opposing the enforcement in the UK of a US$90 million Russian arbitral award, on the basis that it was obtained by fraud.

Large mining company

Jason acted for a large mining company in an LCIA arbitration and related High Court proceedings concerning multiple issues arising from his client’s purchase of another mining company.

Major international metals conglomerate

Acting for a major international metals conglomerate, Jason represented a joint-venture vehicle in a Commercial Court dispute with other shareholders, concerning the repayment of funds following a mining privatisation in Africa.

TMT clients:
Central Asian company

Jason acted for a Central Asian company in a US$500 million dispute concerning the ownership of a Kyrgyz mobile telecommunications company. His work on this matter related to an LCIA arbitration in London and related court proceedings in London, the BVI and the Isle of Man. The case involved complex and unusual jurisdictional and forum issues, which were argued before the Isle of Man courts and the Privy Council.

Russian media company sale

Jason represented a client in High Court and arbitration proceedings arising from the sale of a Russian media company.

Sub-marine fibre optic communications company

Jason advised on a dispute arising from a "landing party agreement" governing the construction and operation of a terminal station for a sub-marine fibre optic communications network.
