Philip Schaeffer was General Counsel of White & Case LLP for more than fifteen years and was formerly a senior partner in the Firm's litigation department.
During more than 50 years as a practicing lawyer in New York, he argued appeals before the highest appellate courts of New York, Connecticut and Delaware and was a lead counsel in numerous trials involving constitutional, real estate investment, intellectual property and commercial matters.
Philip has been appointed to a number of positions within respected professional bodies. He is a former member of the American Bar Association's Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility and its liaison to the ABA's Ethics 20/20 Commission. He was also co-chair of the Commission's Working Group on Alternative Litigation Financing and currently serves as a member of the New York State Bar Association's Committee on Ethics, Committee on Standards of Attorney Conduct (COSAC) and Committee on Professionalism, as well as its Working Group on Legal Marketing. Philip is co-chair of the Firm Counsel Connection, an ABA-sponsored program facilitating meetings among lawyers in cities throughout the nation to discuss risk management and professional responsibility issues.
Philip is a past member of the Committee on Professional and Judicial Ethics of the New York City Bar Association (Citibar), a past member of its Committee on Professional Responsibility and Professional Discipline, as well as a current member of its Committee on the Judiciary. He is also a current member of the Professional Ethics Committee of New York County Lawyers' Association (NYCLA) and its Ethics Institute.
Philip has participated in numerous programs dealing with the professional responsibility of lawyers, including those sponsored or held by the Practising Law Institute, Citibar, NYCLA and ABA. He also provides professional responsibility training, advice and representation to the Firm's lawyers.
