Tihamér Tóth is a counsel and member of the EU Antitrust/Competition Practice Group of the Budapest office of White & Case. He joined the Firm in January 2010.
His practice mainly focuses on state aid matters, European law and Hungarian and European competition law.
Tihamér's extensive knowledge of competition law stems from his previous leadership positions, as well as from his experience representing clients. Prior to joining White & Case, Tihamér was the chairman of the Competition Council of the Hungarian Competition Office (from 2003-2009) and Vice President of the Hungarian Competition Authority.
He also has over 15 years of experience working in government with the European Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the competition office.
Tihamér's significant recent experience includes:
- Providing frequent advice to a global pharmaceutical giant and a leading multinational consumer goods manufacturer on distribution agreements, abuse of dominance and advertising campaigns;
- Advising on complex merger issues, including in connection with filings in the cable television, telecommunications and retail consumer goods sectors, and in particular providing guidance to a long-time client, Hungary's number one alternative and second-largest fixed-line telecommunications provider, on competition filing coordination with respect to its acquisition by a leading CEE private equity buyout firm, and the acquisition of its subsidiary by a leading Turkish telecommunications company;
- Providing frequent, substantive state aid-related advice as well as advice on distribution agreements to the energy sector, including the Hungarian national electricity company, on matters involving subsidizing coal mining, winding up an insolvent company and state support granted to a lignite-fired power station; and
- Representing clients in cartel investigations by the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) in the construction, mill and car coating sectors, including advising seven large Hungarian mills, and successfully advising a Hungarian railway construction company in an administrative procedure regarding a railways construction public procurement cartel where our client was granted 100% immunity from the fine.
Tihamér is an associate professor of Competition Law and vice-dean at the Pázmány Péter Catholic University in Budapest. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the International League of Competition Law and president of the Scientific Committee of the Competition Law Research Center.
He is the editor of a quarterly journal on state aid law in Hungary.
