Our global presence gives us not only an opportunity but also a responsibility to provide legal counsel and assistance to the communities in which we do business. Through our social responsibility initiative, we look for ways to apply our experience to the challenges faced by the global community.
Feature Story Japan Earthquake Response: Supporting Ashinaga's Tohoku Rainbow House Since the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, many lawyers and staff in our Tokyo office have volunteered their time to assist with the relief and reconstruction efforts. Several of our offices around the world have held fundraising events and many lawyers and staff have made personal contributions to the relief efforts, supported by a matching program offered by the Firm.
We also set out to identify longer-term opportunities to support the reconstruction of the Tohoku region most affected by the disaster. We have chosen to provide financial and volunteer support to Ashinaga, a nonprofit educational foundation headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in 1969, Ashinaga provides financial and psychological support for children and youth who have lost one or both parents or whose parents suffer from disabilities. It also operates a global network of Rainbow Houses that provide a wide range of services for thousands of children and youth.
Ashinaga estimates that nearly 1,800 children lost one or both parents in the disaster and has developed plans to build a Rainbow House in Sendai City within the next two years. Ashinaga also plans to build satellite facilities in other locations, including the Iwate and Fukushima Prefectures. The services offered by this network of facilities will be available to all of the affected children in the region.
