Biography

Antonio Cuéllar Zurutuza is an attorney in the firm's department of International Arbitration in Madrid.

His practice is primarily focused on complex international disputes involving investment and commercial arbitration claims, under leading institutional arbitration rules including those of the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes, the International Chamber of Commerce, and the Madrid Court of Arbitration, amongst others.

Antonio’s recent experience has focused on disputes in the renewable energy sector in Spain and Latin America.  In addition, he has been involved in annulment and enforcement proceedings before Spanish domestic courts, and has served as secretary to the tribunal in a commercial arbitration under Spanish law and the rules of the Madrid Court of Arbitration.

Prior to joining White & Case, Antonio worked for a leading international arbitrator in Madrid.

  • Guatemalan and Panamanian renewable solar energy investors in separate ICSID arbitrations initiated against the Republic of Honduras under the DR-CAFTA and the Panama-Central America Free Trade Agreement.
  • A global energy technology company headquartered in Germany in an ICC arbitration seated in Lima and governed under Peruvian law, concerning negligence claims related to the maintenance of a gas turbine at a power plant in Peru.
  • An Eastern European state in an ICC arbitration brought by an Austrian gaming company under a national lottery license agreement.
  • A Belgian industrial group, acting as claimant, in a post-M&A arbitration against a Spanish company, administered by the Madrid Court of Arbitration under a share purchase agreement.
  • Serving as secretary to the tribunal in a Madrid-seated commercial arbitration related to a real estate dispute under Spanish law.

Litigation

  • A Belgian industrial group in annulment and enforcement proceedings of an award deriving from a post-M&A dispute brought under a share purchase agreement by a Belgian industrial group against a Spanish company, administered by the Madrid Court of Arbitration.
  • A Spain-based contractor of industrial and power generation plants in annulment proceedings before the High Court of Justice of Madrid (Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Madrid), arising out of a dispute related to a fertilizer plant.
