Biography

Overview

Asma is an International Energy Lawyer at White & Case LLP in the Energy, Infrastructure and Project Finance Group in London.

She has 20+ years of professional experience delivering legal expertise on global issues related to the energy and oil & gas sectors. She is also an Honorary Lecturer at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee.

Recently, Asma served as a General Legal Counsel at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), coordinating all aspects of the Organization’s legal advice on both international and internal dimensions. After which she was retained as Special Advisor by the OPEC Ministerial Conference on the OPEC+ Cooperation between OPEC and non-OPEC Oil Producing Countries that began with the Declaration of Cooperation, concluded during her tenure as General Legal Counsel in 2016, and culminated with the Alliance of Cooperation in June 2019.

Before joining OPEC, Asma worked as an in-house Legal Counsel for Schlumberger Ltd in Libya and at its Paris Headquarters, covering Europe, CEU and Africa on topics of legal operations, and compliance as well as implementing specific projects on themes such as Local Content and Risk Mapping of Environmental Laws across different regions. Before that, Asma was the United Nations Development Programme Country Manager for Libya where she was leading United Nations organizations’ programmes on various legal and governance issues as well as on regional MENA initiatives such as the Arab Human Development Reports and human rights projects in collaboration with various UN Agencies including OCHA, UNODC and UNICEF.

Asma is a qualified Libyan lawyer and speaks English and Arabic fluently. She has an LLB (Hons) in Law and an LLM in International Business and Comparative Law focusing on International Arbitration and Banking Law as well as being a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators with extensive experience as a counsel in International Arbitrations and leading Strategic Negotiations and Mediations.

Asma speaks English and Arabic. She has an LLB (Hons) in Law and an LLM in International Business and Comparative Law focusing on International Arbitration and Banking Law. She holds the Royal Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' Diploma and is a recognized Member with extensive experience as an expert in international arbitration. Asma is a certified in advanced strategic negations and recognised for her role in international strategic negotiations and mediations in oil and gas.
