Biography

Overview

Cristiana Gonçalves Correia is an Associate in our International Arbitration group, based in the Paris office. She focuses on complex cross-border commercial arbitration, in various sectors and under different laws (including Portuguese, Angolan, Brazilian, Mozambican and English law), primarily conducted under ICC or LCIA rules. She has experience in disputes in Latin America and Africa, with a particular focus on Lusophone markets.

Prior to joining White & Case, Cristiana worked in the arbitration department of a leading law firm in Lisbon, and was a Teaching Assistant at Católica Law School.

Experience

Cristiana's recent experience, including prior to joining White & Case, includes:

Acting for an African state in ICC and Swiss Chambers arbitrations involving claims for US$800 million in a matter arising from an international fraud, bribery, and corruption scandal.

Representing PT Ventures in proceedings connected to its successful ICC arbitration against the other shareholders of Unitel S.A., the Angolan telecommunications company. The Award of February 2019 directed the respondents to pay PT Ventures over US$750 million in compensation and interest, and was subsequently successfully enforced in the BVI courts with an additional victory before the Paris Court of Appeals in January 2021.

Representing a Brazilian pulp company in a shareholder dispute over its acquisition.

Acting for a Luxembourgish company in an ICC arbitration arising out of the performance of a share purchase and sale agreement.*

Representing a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands in a contractual dispute, in an LCIA arbitration.*
