Overview

Jon Hawk is a litigation partner based in the Firm's Los Angeles office. Jon has an international practice focused on technology, internet, and social media law. He represents clients throughout the world in complex civil litigation involving multinational and multidisciplinary legal issues. His representations frequently involve disputes regarding intermediary liability, privacy and defamation, unfair competition, consumer protection, contractual obligations, intellectual property, and fundamental rights. Jon's international practice also includes regular, cross-functional mandates to advise on regulatory, legislative, product, and related policy issues that impact technology and social media companies.

Jon maintains an active national commercial litigation practice, representing clients in a wide range of industries in consumer class actions, company governance, fiduciary duty, and contract disputes.

Experience

Serving as a member of a team that handles all international litigation for Meta (formerly Facebook) and the Meta family of companies, including matters implicating privacy, intermediary liability, unfair competition, intellectual property, and consumer protection laws.

Manage and strategize complex mass actions, including before the highest civil and constitutional courts, on novel issues regarding consumer-facing platforms' contractual and fundamental rights vis-à-vis those of their users.

Representation of a group text messaging service and smartphone application provider in defense of a putative nationwide class action filed on behalf of individuals alleging they received unsolicited text messages in violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). The court granted summary judgment and entered judgment in favor of the Firm's client. Glauser v. GroupMe, Inc., 2015 WL 475111 (N.D. Cal.).

Representation of other companies in various industries defending against putative nationwide class actions alleging the unsolicited dissemination of text messages and placement of voice calls under the TCPA.

Representation of a national fitness club against a putative class action alleging the club's membership agreement violated certain New Jersey consumer protection statutes. The court granted the motion to dismiss on all claims and entered judgment in favor of the Firm's client. Sauro v. L.A. Fitness Int'l., LLC, 2013 WL 978807 (D.N.J.).

Representation of a client in two JAMS arbitrations, obtaining a complete defense award, an award of damages on counterclaims, and an award of fees and costs in favor of the Firm's client as the prevailing party.

Representation of a real estate investment company founder and executive in a shareholder dispute, defending against fraud claims. The court granted summary judgment and entered judgment in favor of the Firm's client.

Representation of an investment company and individual shareholders in a shareholder dispute and derivative action, prosecuting fraud and dissolution claims.

Representation of other companies in various industries defending against putative nationwide class actions alleging the unsolicited dissemination of text messages and placement of voice calls under the TCPA.
