In the wake of the Great Financial Crisis in 2008, numerous observers predicted a pullback from the trend towards deeper economic and technological ties, if not the end of globalization itself. That gloomy moment passed as the world soon embarked on another round of global growth. Recently, however, the conflict in Ukraine, the enduring COVID-19 pandemic, disrupted supply chains, fears of inflation, and policy confusion over energy and food security have led to the view that we are entering a new era of deglobalization with, perhaps, cultural schisms that will be difficult to repair. Even in this environment, the movement of goods, money, people, and ideas around the globe continues, including through different or new channels if necessary. With this state of the world as the backdrop, White & Case offers our 2022 Back-to-Business program series, in which Firm partners and outside experts will highlight the trends in trade flows, energy transition and sustainability, technology, intellectual property, competition law, environmental, social, governance and human rights due diligence, rising inbound investment and leveraged finance, and comment on how they will shape the newly forming global order.
For this year’s keynote address, we are pleased to present Professor Mitoji Yabunaka, former Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, joined by Dr. Robert Feldman, Senior Advisor to Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities Co., Ltd., for a discussion of Japan’s role in creating this new era. It is time to reimagine globalization.
We hope you will join us for these thought-provoking sessions, and that you can attend the reception on Thursday evening of October 27, 2022.
