Daren is a leading partner within the Firm's global Technology Transactions Practice. He regularly counsels clients in connection with M&A and intellectual property strategy and licensing matters. For almost two decades, Daren has represented clients from a variety of industries in connection with their most important strategic IP, data and technology focused transactions.
Both large corporate and start-up clients seek his advice regarding data privacy and transactions involving the acquisition, development, transfer and licensing of IP, brands, information technology (IT), software, hardware, data and other content. He also has several years' experience dealing with open source code issues and is a Black Duck Certified Legal Professional.
Daren has handled matters relating to a wide variety of technologies providing him with a broad perspective that lends insight to new and emerging technologies. These technologies include semiconductors, mobile devices, cloud computing and software as a service offerings, drones, autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence (AI), e-commerce, infrastructure and platform technologies, wearable devices, the Internet of Things (IoT), and others. These matters usually involve deep commercial and technical complexity.
Daren has an extensive track record in M&A, strategic alliance and licensing arrangements and day-to-day operational matters ranging from product development and the formulation of go-to-market strategies to supply chain issues for devices and cloud-based solutions. He regularly handles complex international joint ventures and corporate transactions often involving integration issues. He has also handled a variety of trademark-focused matters related to the acquisition and exploitation of well-known brand portfolios and sponsorship relationships. Having worked closely with in-house legal and technical teams throughout his career, Daren was called upon by the partners of White & Case to manage a multi-year transformation of the firm's global IT infrastructure and critical systems.
Prior to focusing on transactional work, Daren litigated intellectual property disputes in courts and tribunals throughout the United States. This experience gives him a unique perspective, which he is able to leverage in his transactional practice.
Daren frequently speaks and writes about technology, privacy and intellectual property matters. He has been quoted in a variety of major publications. He has also been a regular contributor to White & Case's Technology Newsflash, authoring articles and updates on the latest technology, outsourcing and privacy legal issues and trends affecting businesses today.
He is an active member of several leading associations, including the American Bar Association (including the ABA's Intellectual Property Law and Science & Technology Law Sections) and the International Trademark Association. Daren is also an officer of the Technology Law Section of the International Bar Association.

Representation of Intel Corporation in a series of acquisitions of technology companies innovating in sectors such as AI, deep learning, semiconductors, autonomous vehicles, drones, and IoT, including the following transactions:
- Acquisition of an AI/deep learning software company
- Acquisition of a German drone company with autopilot and anti-collision technologies
- Acquisition of a Russian company with IoT, computer vision and autonomous vehicle technologies
- Acquisition of an Italian IoT and self-driving safety technology company
- Acquisition of a fabless semiconductor company providing structured ASICs
- Asset purchase of a pan-Asian mobile chip business
Representation of EchoStar Corp. in the exchange of its EchoStar Technologies businesses for the Hughes Retail Group (HRG) tracking stock owned by DISH Network Corp. The transaction was effectively a carve-out M&A transaction in which we assisted with reorganizing and replacing and in some cases cross-licensing valuable intellectual property and information technology assets for the separated businesses.
Representation of Salesforce in connection with a License and Strategic Alliance Agreement with Dun & Bradstreet that allowed for the creation of a 'Data-as-a-Service' offering called Data.com and other licensing and alliance arrangements with companies such as Thomson Reuters.
Iconix Brand Group, Inc.
Representation of Brand management company Iconix Brand Group, Inc. (Iconix) in the US$345 million sale of its entertainment division to DHX Media Ltd. Iconix's entertainment division included an 80 percent controlling interest in the Peanuts branded business, including content featuring Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy and other well-known characters, and 100 percent of the Strawberry Shortcake business and its related characters. The remaining 20 percent interest in Peanuts, which is licensed in more than 100 countries, will continue to be held by the family of Charles M. Schulz, creator of Peanuts. Strawberry Shortcake has more than 350 licenses.
Iconix Brand Group, Inc.
Representation of Iconix Brand Group, Inc. in connection with various other matters, including the sale of the SHARPER IMAGE business, a transaction with Madonna resulting in the creation of a Material Girl-branded line of clothing as well as and the creation of a joint venture with a Hong Kong-based company to expand Iconix's business in Asia.
Representation of Powermat Technologies in connection with a strategic license and collaboration agreement with Flextronics to embed Powermat's wireless charging technology in electronics.
Representation of Altria in negotiating a strategic alliance through a series of agreements with Philip Morris International Inc. (PMI). Following this alliance, PMI will license and distribute Altria's vapor technology-based e-cigarettes outside the United States, while Altria will license and distribute PMI's alternative heated tobacco e-cigarette product within the United States.
Representation of SoftBank Corp. in connection with the establishment of a JV with PayPal Pte. to bring PayPal Here, a global mobile payment solution, to Japan.

Representation of Corporativo Bimbo S.A. de C.V., a member of the Grupo Bimbo corporate family and its affiliates, in connection with a global IT outsourcing to HP Enterprise Services LLC, the primary Hewlett Packard entity responsible for the outsourcing business of EDS. This transaction enabled our client to safely migrate to various new cloud computing technologies and platforms, and it remains one of the largest outsourcing arrangements in Latin America.
